My First EveryPlate Box

I don't think this one is as popular as other meal kits. This one was given to me for free, which happened to be my very first meal kit box! These services have been very popular lately, especially with meal planners and fitness junkies. I am no fitness junkie, but I love a good meal plan, and anything to make dinner easier is right up my alley! With you here reading this, I assume easier dinner planning is right up your alley too! What is EveryPlate? It's a popular meal service and subscription box. They provide weekly meal kits that are fresh, easy, and affordable. With each box, you receive recipes and ingredients to complete each dish. With EveryPlate you can save time by cutting out the meal planning and grocery shopping. Plus each recipe comes with portioned ingredients so there is no waste. Ingredients are fresh and ready to use. Recipes are easy to follow and most of them are quick to cook up! Let's talk about the box I recently received.

So to start off, I didn't buy this EveryPlate box and I had no plans to try out any meal kit. My mother was the one who was using this meal service. She had canceled her order and They accidentally sent another box the following week. Unfortunately for her, the recipes included were things my brother won't eat. He won't eat tomatoes of any form, and every meal in this box happened to have tomatoes in it. My mom of course didn't want this to go to waste, so she brought it over to my house. I was more than happy to use it! I figured, even if I didn't like the recipe, I could easily change it up and make something else. Due to my lack of thinking, I did not get many photos. I'll take more pictures next time so you can see the entire process! In the meantime, I can show you the recipes and at least one meal I prepared. I received four recipes with almost all the ingredients. I was given recipes for Turkish-Spiced Chicken & Rice Bowls, Hearty Chicken Sausage & Kale Soup, Creamy Tomato & Bacon Risotto, and Sweet Potato & Pepper Fajitas.

Let's discuss the recipes next. I will show you each recipe and, of course, explain how it tasted! I'll tell you if I was missing any ingredients, or if I changed the recipe/ingredients in any way, and how easy or hard it was to make. My luck with these recipes was pretty good. I've seen lots of recipes on the site that I could make without buying a meal kit. The meal kits, however, are still easier and less wasteful, which is why some of you would purchase those recipes anyways. Let's go in order from my least enjoyed meal to my favorite one! To start, we have the Sweet Potato & Pepper Fajitas:

This recipe has the option to add protein when ordering, but they sent it without any protein. So it was just vegetables in a taco shell, which is fine, but boring. We had a lemon & herb pork tenderloin in the freezer that I thawed out and baked so we could cut it up and add to our fajitas. This recipe was missing the cheese and tortillas, maybe a fluke? All fine, I just grabbed some tortillas from the store, and I already had plenty of cheese because my 2-year-old eats shredded cheese by the handfuls! This recipe is easy and wasn't spicy at all, at least not for us. The longest part of this recipe is waiting for the vegetables to roast. Overall, this wasn't a bad meal. We enjoyed eating it, just not as much as we enjoyed the other recipes! Next up is Hearty Chicken Sausage & Kale Soup:

I'm pretty sure I liked this recipe more than my husband did. We don't eat kale in our household, just not a fan of it. We switched out the kale and used spinach instead. This recipe was pretty easy to complete. We definitely enjoyed it straight out of the pot! Despite the fact that my husband hates leftovers, this meal left us with plenty of leftovers. I was able to have the leftovers for lunch the next two days. I baked up some southern biscuits to dip and it was so yummy! This soup tasted like sausage gravy without the thickness of the gravy, and I love biscuits and gravy. I am really missing the South right now because Bojangles biscuits and gravy is one of my top favorite things to buy. Add in a cheddar bo and bo berry biscuit, you would have my whole heart and stomach in a vice right there! This recipe was pretty easy to make, mostly just a lot of stirring the pot! Coming up now is Turkish-Spiced Chicken & Rice Bowls:

The rice for this recipe is fantastic! Once you have garlic cooked in with your rice, you will forever want to make your rice this way! The cucumber and tomato salad added a light and delicious freshness to the plate. As for the chicken, it was perfect, the Turkish seasoning was strong but so good! Topped off with sour cream, we actually added some dill to our sour cream which gave it more of a Tzatziki sauce flavor. This recipe is easy, the longest part is cooking the rice. I know a lot of people struggle with cooking rice. One tip I would suggest is using a rice cooker. Definitely a recipe we plan to make again. Lastly, we have my absolute favorite recipe we received. My husband loved this recipe as well. Creamy Tomato & Bacon Risotto:

Our favorite recipe, which we plan to make again and keep as a family favorite! A short shopping list for this meal but it does take a lot of time. If you don't already know, Risotto takes a bit of time and work to make. I would not say this recipe is easy but it's also not very hard. If you are fine putting in the time and hard work for a very delicious outcome, you should definitely try this recipe! Before I explain the flavors here, I should mention that I love grilled cheese and tomato soup. In general, I will drink tomato soup by itself. This meal has a sweet, creamy, homemade tomato sauce with rice and it pretty much tastes like bacon! I loved these flavors. Imagine how happy I was when we still had leftovers from this dish! I got to eat it for lunch the next day and it was still really yummy! This meal was the first one I made, so I did take some photos of it. Here are the ingredients laid out before cooking this meal. This was meant to be servings for two people but my husband and I tend to eat smaller portions. We ended up having two extra portions left over.

Below is how mine looked after I made this recipe and tried to plate it and make it pretty. This is one serving portioned out for my family, but the original serving from the recipe is supposed to be double my portion. To be fair, this meal is very filling and this small portion was perfect for me and my husband.

Overall, we loved every meal but of course, had our favorites. I'm going to try EveryPlate again and take more pictures. I would like to write out the whole process and my experience so I can share that with you. Hopefully, you will see that upcoming in a future blog. I would love to write about EveryPlate again but also compare it to another meal kit service. Maybe HelloFresh? I should also say, I'm not in any way partnered or paid by EveryPlate themselves. Maybe someday, but for now, they do give everyone an "Invite A Friend" link. This link offers a huge discount of $105 off your order. When I was looking at their site, it looked like you could get your first box for around $30 which is super cheap compared to the original price of these meal kits. Check out the link below for a discount!
